Lost? Follow the True Leader

As human beings, we have the independent ability to freely make our choices, granted some choices are not wise and we suffer the consequences. However, if one follows Jesus, he or she will not get lost and will enter into the gateway of eternal life.

The first time that Jesus spoke the words, "Follow Me" was to His future disciples, Peter and Andrew. As He walked by the Sea of Galilee and saw them fishing, He said, "Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men..." (Matthew 4:19-20) The most amazing part of this story is that the Bible says that both men immediately left their nets and followed Jesus. The actions of these future disciples are quite indicative of how believers should live their life after turning their life over to God. The disciples no longer gave sin credence in their lives and started a new journey with Christ. How hard is it for new believers to turn aside from their old lifestyle and leave behind the drunkenness, gossiping, fornication, adultery, etc.? Stopping sinful behavior to truly follow Jesus may be easier said than done, but if you lean on the words of Jesus- you can achieve His gift of salvation.
During another time, a man told Jesus that he needed to bury his father before he started following Him and Jesus told the man, "Follow me and let the dead are spiritually alive follow the Living God. The truth of the matter is that people come up with countless excuses as to why they shouldn't change their lifestyle in order to follow the footsteps of Jesus. Nevertheless, one just needs to remember that the wages of sin are death (Romans 6:13). The scripture continues "...but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Christ extends His hand in love, for He is well aware of the spiritual battle we face in our daily life. He offers, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) Our burdens are heavy on our mind and body, what a priceless gift to have the Son of God offer our souls rest. Not to mention, in following Jesus and giving your allegiance to Him, the fruits of the Holy Spirit-love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are exclusively available to you (Galatians 5:22).

As one lives in this worldly world full of temptation and wickedness, entering the narrow gate isn't effortless. How does one stay on the straight and narrow path? One cannot do it solo; not only does one need to follow Jesus, but cling to his undying love and promises. There will be times when one feels the need to stray onto the wide path of temptation. Take heed and remember when facing these arrows that life throws at you, Jesus said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU," (Hebrews 13:5) One of my favorite songs is Follow Me. Should You Reciprocate Follows on Twitter?


It's a common problem that many people face when it comes to using Twitter. Should you follow back every person who follows you? Should you expect the people you follow to return the favor? Many Twitter users will say yes but I take a different stance on this.

Getting offended when someone you follow doesn't Followers UK  you back is just going to cause you more grief and stress than you need or want. In my opinion, it's not what Twitter is about anyway.


I have over 23,000 followers and I assure you I do not follow them all back. I follow people who don't follow me back but if they tweet something that is beneficial to me, it's worth following them.

Twitter shouldn't be about reciprocal followings- "I'll follow you if you follow me". Unfortunately, there will always be people who equate it to some type of popularity contest.

I do try to take time to look at the feeds of my new followers and thank them for following but you can @ someone without following back. While I follow most back, I don't feel obligated to do so. I don't want anyone who I follow to feel obligated to follow me back, either. It's great if they want to but it shouldn't be required.

I want people to follow me because they like something about my bio or they enjoy my previous tweets, not because they think doing so will make me follow them back.

Ultimately, people can use Twitter however they feel like, provided it is within the terms of use so no user should expect others to follow their own guidelines for etiquette but there are always those people who think everyone should do what they want.

I then click on @kjmastaw to see if anyone has replied or retweeted one of my recent updates. Usually, I find several. a) I'm not already following;
b) have a photo with their tweet. This is important. I want "people" following me; and
c) have posted within the last 24 hours. I don't want infrequent tweeters on my list.

I go through and do this for as long as possible which means either I run out of time or I hit my following limit, whichever comes first.

Follow this procedure, daily, and I guarantee that you will have at least 100 new followers at the end of each day.

What is a Christian? Part 2 - Follow Me


In part one of this series, we learned that the first words Jesus spoke in the gospel of Matthew were, "Repent, which means to feel such sorrow for sin as to be disposed to change one's life for the better. It's easy to feel sorry for things, especially when we've been discovered and our sins begin to have consequences, but Jesus called us not only to be sorry, but to want to change. Many answered that call. Peter and Andrew, James and John, the rest of the disciple and many unnamed people felt the pull in their hearts and left their activities to follow. Those who chose to continue on with the Savior left ships, houses, occupations, servants, parents, friends, even spouses, according to Matthew 19:27. "Lo! we have left all things and followed thee." They left all that they knew to physically follow Jesus around the highways and byways of Israel. As they followed, Jesus formed a bond with them, a relationship of teacher and student, of father to children, of friend to friend. It is a reality that is shown though the lives of those who have actually answered His call.

There's a 'but' to this however. He is still offering all of the blessings and the relationship 'but' we must be willing to do what the first true Christians did. We must be willing to let go of the things we are holding so tightly and follow Him. Everyone has goals, plans, hopes, dreams, and ideas of how their lives should look. We can hold onto our plans. We can struggle and strive to accomplish them, rising early and going to bed late. Or maybe our plans include not working, letting someone else do our part. Yet, in the end, often those who have achieved their dreams are left feeling empty. How often have you read of the suicide of a rich, successful, famous person and wondered why?

Our plans may look good but they do not fulfill the real desires of our hearts. We know instinctively that something is missing so we set about trying to fill the emptiness. If our own plans do not fill the void, we look for someone else to follow who seems to have the answers. There are many voices today calling out, "Follow me." We have the Oprah's, the Dr. Phils, the voices of evangelists and preachers, the famous authors, the beautiful people of Hollywood, even the best friend with the magnetic personality who always has such fun ideas. We need to be very careful not to fall into the trap of following anyone other than Jesus, even if they are one of His followers. Anyone we set up as an idol of 'worship' in our lives will disappoint us. There is no one who we can follow who is worthy of the homage that we pay them, Even a good man is still just a man.

Christ says, "Follow ME. He repeats it many times in the gospels, calling men from their shallow pursuits into a life worth living. In Matthew 16:26, Jesus reminds us of what little value the things we cling to really have.

The rich, young ruler is an example of a moment of decision in a life. This man came to Jesus feeling very spiritually righteous. He thought he had done the right things and that Jesus would commend him and send him on his way. Would you believe, that to increase your probability of success on any one sale that the sale gets colder for every day you delay before following up. In fact, here's a good rule of thumb, if your prospect WAS interested when you first met him, it becomes exponentially colder and he is less interested for every day that passes. EXPONENTIALLY colder for every day that you delay.

So, let's say that you meet someone at a networking event, a chamber business fair, or whatever, and you reply within 24 hours, the first day. You have the most probability of closing the sale. Or, if you reply in 2 days (remember EXPONENTIAL), then your prospect is 1/22 = 1/4th as interested as he would have been within the first day.

As Seth Godin Would Say, "Are You Developing a Tribe to Follow You?"


Think about this, when you are leading, do you actually have followers? When you are using your social media and marketing sites, are you Facebook'ing, Tweeting, or Link'ing, and creating a "tribe" of Followers Australia, or just trying to make a connection?

I have been researching and trying to connect with the world of opportunities within the social media marketing venue, higher ed, management and leadership, for a few months now, and it is, and can be, very overwhelming. There is a myriad of options to log-in to, create, implement, join, share, or just publish stories or communications in which you come across on a daily basis. Sometimes I ask myself, is there enough time in one day to actually "stay connected" as much as you need to? What is considered "enough"? It is a huge plethora of an atmosphere to tap in to and to understand. As I continue to try to make my connections and to stay abreast of this new and crazy, yet fast and always changing world, I am learning things on a daily basis. I have created my personal/social pages and my professional pages, and sometimes I even get them both confused when I am posting, depending on what site I am logged into, or what site I am logged in 'as', or should it be @, #, etc. Some things I want friends to see, and other items I want to share and connect with my colleagues and business connections. But geez, if I am not logged in to the correct version of the site, I am posting business for pleasure, and pleasure for business. Talk about overwhelming and confusing! It is absolutely nuts! But I have become such an addict at it now that I am not sure how to stop.

Until one day when I realized that just "connecting" is not enough. Developing a "tribe" of followers, and determining what it is that I am trying to point out, or who it is I am trying to connect with and what our shared vision is, is more difficult then it sounds. When I look at company Facebook pages, and try to relate to a brand, a logo, or a product, most of the time I find that the message is missing. Why do I want to look at a site that posts pictures only, but does not create a shared mission or vision with the audience in which they are trying to connect with. Do I care that a particular drink company posts their new logo, but does not tell me why I should drink this particular product? I compared this same philosophy to that of the organizations of which I have worked, and I found some similar issues. Does our site have a brand, does our logo stand out, and do our followers "follow" us for a reason? What is our message, why are we trying to network with others in the first place? It is so much more than a broader picture than having these questions answered by someone in a marketing/advertising department, because everyone shares in the insights that should go into building a particular company/product site to meet these expectations.
  This same thing correlates to those who we are trying to connect with. Instead of sending a basic message to connect, stating how you think, or feel, you know him/her, send a brief message stating the shared interest you have with one another, or why you are wanting to stay connected with them; i.e. looking for recruiters who have connections in my area, looking to hire, my mission/vision matches your mission/vision, our products are similar, etc. I think we can all attest to the fact that we get "connected" on a daily basis, by a basic e-mail, or invite increasingly more and more every day, but can we answer the question as to why we want to connect with that person, or what we have in common? Those of us in the higher education industry, or sales industry, know that we are always focusing on the "WIIFM" (What's In It For Me) approach to closing a sale. So why can't we, or why should we not be doing the same with our connections? And when we do connect to a group, or a company, or a person, should we not have regular communication with them so that we are staying abreast of one another?

"The market wants you to be remarkable Most of all, the market has demonstrated that ideas that spread win, and the ideas that are spreading are the remarkable ones" (Godin, 2008). So let's be remarkable with one another and stay in touch with our "tribe" in which we have created. 3 Numbers More Important Than Your instagram  Follower Count

(I never took the time to figure out which website tweets this for you). Everyone wants more followers and people often resort to gimmicks to get them, such as creating follow-back retweets and lots of other time-wasters.

In this article, I'm going to explain why this is missing the forest for the trees-and where you should focus your attention instead.

While some people go to great lengths-spending considerable time and money to gain followers on Twitter (as well as Facebook) - I would argue that they're missing the point. Yes, you want a large follower count, but I prefer to see it as a means to an end. There's a weak correlation between your following and your profitability, but there's a much stronger one for your profitability and several other measures. And it's no coincidence that each of these metrics measures your level of engagement in one way or another. After all, it's only when people are paying attention to you that they can become your customers. So what are these 3 metrics?

Number of Lists You Appear On

This number is far from foolproof, but getting "listed" is an indication that someone cares what you have to say-at least in theory. Typically when someone lists you, it's because they want to be able to find you efficiently amongst all the tweets that would otherwise appear on the homepage. The problem with this, however, is that there's no guarantee they're actually looking at the list they've placed you on. Despite my best intentions, I have several lists that I rarely look at even though I'm interested in what these people have to say. And that's unfortunately (in my opinion) a problem with Twitter in general-it doesn't use a system similar to EdgeRank to make it easier to find interesting tweets.

To find out how many lists you appear on, log into Tweetdeck and click on your name anywhere you see it mentioned. This used to appear directly on your Twitter profile but no longer does.

Your Klout Score

Klout is a service that measures your social influence. In my opinion, it's unfairly vilified by people who expect such web apps to somehow be flawless. Klout has a very difficult service to provide-and given the number-crunching that goes into calculating a Klout score, I think they're doing a pretty good job of it.

Your Klout score is an arbitrary rating from 0 to 100 that measures how much attention people pay to you through social media. Receiving retweets, 'Likes' on Facebook, or having a lot of followers are all things that increase your Klout score.

"But wait," I've heard more than one person say, "just because I retweet someone it doesn't mean they influence me. Just because Justin Bieber has a Klout score of 92 it doesn't mean I'd jump off a bridge if he told me to. So who are they to measure someone's 'influence?'"

Semantics


Klout currently works as a measure of who's "hot" on social media (although they're trying to integrate real-world data as well). If you use your score to track your progress over time, and learn who the influencers are in your niche, then you'll understand the utility of Klout and why it's more important than your follower count. I check my score regularly, simply to ensure that it's always increasing.

Number of Retweets

Like the previous numbers, the number of retweets you receive is far from a foolproof metric. If you simply tweet inane quotes all day, you might get 30-50 retweets per post. Obviously that doesn't mean it's going to make you any money.

But retweets are much more useful than follower count for measuring your engagement. And this number will vary by industry; my social media marketing account only gets a handful of retweets per post (a lot of web-savvy users are competing with me), but my psychology and wellness account, with a comparable number of followers, gets dozens.

Like your Klout score, you should monitor this over time to ensure it's continually increasing. But unlike your Klout score, you can use this data to arrive at actionable conclusions. If certain topics get a lot of retweets for you, it means those topics resonate with your audience and they want more of that type of content. If something doesn't get a lot of retweets, it means your followers didn't find it useful or you posted it at a bad time.

Avoid Instant Gratification

Your follower count provides instant gratification and it's a number that's immediately presented to you when you log into Twitter. Even I admittedly care about it, but I use it as a barometer and pay more attention to the numbers described above.
